History:
Jack O'Neill was born in Chicago but raised in Minnesota, the only child of John and Carol O'Neill. Jack entered the Air Force Academy at age 18 and has served with the Air Force ever since, attaining the rank of Colonel. He has spent most of his career engaged in covert ops and otherwise top secret missions. He'd love to share stories of his career but he can't, because then he'd have to shoot anyone he told.

He was married for fifteen years to Sara, and they had one son, Charlie. When Charlie was nine he got his hands on Jack's personal sidearm and accidently shot himself. His death nearly destroyed Jack and did destroy his marriage. When Jack returned from what he'd thought would be his final mission, his wife had moved out. They eventually divorced.

Well aware of Jack's state of mind after Charlie's death, the Air Force called him back for one last (suicide) mission: leading a team through an alien device known as a stargate to an alien world. Jack led that team fully prepared to detonate a bomb that would eliminate any threat from that other world as well as, most likely, himself. There were two things he hadn't factored into the equation: Daniel Jackson and the people of Abydos.

Jack returned from the mission with a renewed appreciation for life. He also lied to his superiors, telling them he had detonated the bomb when in fact he'd left the people of Abydos and Daniel Jackson alive and well halfway across the galaxy. His lie was discovered a year later when the Goa'uld 'god' Apophis came through the stargate to Earth, beginning--or rather renewing-- a long running war between humans and Goa'uld.

For the last five years Jack has been second in command at the SGC (Stargate Command) housed in Cheyenne Mountain, CO. He leads SG-1, the premier team of the command. He, archeaologist Daniel Jackson, astrophysicist Samantha Carter, and the Jaffa, Teal'c, comprise a first contact team. They explore other worlds, meet new beings (both human and alien), and seek technology and allies to aid them in their war against the Goa'uld.

Recently, Jack lost his good friend and teammate, Daniel to radiation poisoning sustained on an alien world. It's not the first team member he's lost, but it may be the last.

Personality:
Jack is a simple man, his needs few. He's happy to kick back with a few friends for pizza and beer. His ambition is to retire to his cabin in Minnesota and spend his days fishing in the lake of no fish. He might, if he's feeling ambitious, get a dog.

Jack also pretends to be simple minded. He's not. He simply prefers to have his enemies underestimate him. Sometimes he's so good at playing dumb, even his friends underestimate him.

He is, not surprisingly for a military man, rather guarded about showing his true emotions. He often uses inappropriate humor and/or sarcasm to deflect attention. Yet, by contrast, he's a toucher. Hugs, pats on the back: he's comfortable invading the personal space of others. Though you should probably be careful of invading his personal space uninvited; he does know multiple ways to kill you using only his bare hands.

Since his divorce, Jack's personal life has been mostly a solitary one. His teammates are about the only people he openly cares for and with whom he spends time. Jack is especially close to Daniel. They shared the first mission through the stargate, and Daniel played a key role in getting Jack to care about life again after Charlie's death. It forged a bond between them that has been strained at times, but never broken.

When Daniel died in the line of duty, it may have been the last straw. Jack has grown increasingly weary of battling not only military enemies, but his own government. The fact that Daniel 'ascended' doesn't really make Jack feel any better. He figures either way Daniel's gone, and besides, he's never really trusted Oma.

Disclaimer: I do not, never have, and never will own Jack O'Neill, Stargate SG-1, or Richard Dean Anderson. I wish, but no. This journal is purely for RP in [info]stopforthenight,[info]dark_desert_hwy and no money is being made from it. Again, I wish, but no.
